Timing Gears /Camshaft Adjuster

Timing Gears /Camshaft  Adjuster

The camshaft adjuster (VCT) consists of a stator driven by the timing chain or timing belt and a rotor fixed to the camshaft. The rotor is hydraulically operated, enabling the adjustment of valve timing to advance or delay the valve opening. This allows the engine to optimize valve timing at different speeds and operating conditions, ensuring good starting performance.

The Three Most Common Types of VCT:

1. Remote VCT

  • Compatible with various sprocket types and sizes.
  • Optional torque compensation spring.
  • Example: Chevrolet Cruze 1.6L.

2. Mid-Mounted VCT

Compared to remote VCT, the mid-mounted VCT has a shorter distance between the actuator and the controlled component, offering a more compact design. Key advantages include:

  • Reduced oil consumption.
  • Lower NVH noise levels.
  • Minimized oil pressure fluctuations within the system.
  • Faster system adjustment response.
  • Examples: EA888 Gen 2/Gen 3, LSY 2.0T, BMW N20.

3. Electric VCT

The electric camshaft phase adjuster (VCT) and its control solenoid (OCV) are core components of the variable valve timing system. If a fault occurs, it may lead to:

  • Increased engine oil consumption.
  • Reduced fuel efficiency.
  • Abnormal emissions.
  • Power loss, unusual noises, fault codes, and potentially engine failure
